I purchased it myself, and I know quite a lot of people here also did. I think you found *the* furry guild btw, as that's pretty much where we will all be come release. I do hope to see you there too.

  • OMG. Rise of the Triads is one of the first FPS I ever played. Probably my favorite of the time too. I hope we will see the return of the Excalibat . Definitely something to keep my eyes on.

  • Valen replied to the topic Re: Steam Summer Sales! in the forum.
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (part of Carpe Fulgur Collection) is on a 75% sale (5$) for the next 10 hours.

The game throws you into the shoes of Recette, an eight(?) years old girl who somehow ends up managing a shop to pay up her parents' debts. Now THAT's stellar parenthood. As you could guess, an eight years old girl is hardly fit to go adventuring on her own, so most of the game is centered around buying and selling items to the many inhabitants of her hometown. Buy low and sell high, bargain with people to come up with what they feel is a just price, decorate your shop to modify its ambiance and which kind of customer will come in, increase your merchant level and relationship with customers, all in the name of glorious capitalism!

After a certain point, heroes will come buy equipment and sell their hard earned loot to you. You will also have the opportunity to sponsor them. Namely, you pay to accompany them to a dungeon. They do the killing (under your control) and you keep the loot for yourself. You can then use what you acquired on these journeys to craft equipment which you can sell for a hefty profit. Beware not to spend too much time adventuring though, as will find yourself short on time. Effectively, each month you have to pay an increasing amount of money to soak up your debt, or face eviction. Which basically means the end of the game. This kind of timed game might not be for everyone, but once you're done with the main story, you can keep playing endlessly. This means exploring the optional dungeons and watching the many character stories unfold, which should keep you busy for quite a few additional hours. And that's not even mentioning the option for a new game+.

To resume, Recettar: An Item Shop's tale is a pretty original game, with very cute anime design and a funny story line and characters. However, be warned that you'd have to like cutesy to really enjoy the game, otherwise you might find yourself rolling your eyes on more than one occasion.

Well, this probably will be my last update on Steam sales as the latest Guild Wars 2 beta event hits tomorrow, meaning I'll be quite busy . I hope these little segments made you discover and enjoy some new games, and keep looking for good gaming deals! Capitalism, Ho!

  • Valen replied to the topic Re: Steam Summer Sales! in the forum.
Well what do you know. I found some more little gems while digging around games lists. Seems a lot of the summer deals are not shown on the main store page, so I'd advise anyone who as a particular game they want on their mind to take a look at its store page.

Those are for danmaku/shmups/bullet hell enthusiasts out there. The first one being Jamestown: a game that sends you into an alternate 17th century universe where Britain colonized Mars. It's a vertical shmup (the screen is scrolling from top to bottom), and is a lot more casual and easy to get into as far as those kind of games go. It is thus a good choice if you're a novice or if you want to give a try at the genre. The game also supports up to 4 players in coop and multiple challenge stages. It is 60% off until the end of the summer sale; 4$ for the basic game and 6$ for the deluxe pack which includes the DLC and the soundtrack.

The other games are all part of the Gundemonium serie. Recollection and GundeadliGne both are horizontal shmups while the third game in the serie: Hitogata Happa, is a vertical one. I need to mention that those games are a lot harder than the previously mentioned Jamestown, and that only the most skilled players will complete it on the highest difficulty.

Recollection is probably the one that has the most customization options. You can choose your character basic attack, special skill and bomb which will also affect how your character looks. Winged nekomimi, flying maid? Yep, it's all there.

I know little about GundeadliGne, so I will only mention that it supports 2 player coop and the ability for your character to turn: facing either the left or the right of the screen. While it doesn't seem like much, this means the enemies come from both sides of the screen which alters the gameplay a lot.

In Hitogata Happa, you fight with remote controlled dolls that each have different powers. You choose which ones you will have access to during a stage before it starts by spending gems which are acquired by killing previous stages enemies. You will automatically switch to another of your chosen doll when you die, but can't switch freely mid-battle. A pretty original mechanic in this game is that you can ram your doll into enemies and self-destruct. It will destroy your doll, but will also do tremendous damage to enemies. It is particularly useful during boss battles as each boss has an enrage timer.

With their new rearranged soundtrack, which really fits their frantic nature, and their cute anime look, I'm sure some people will be all over these. All three games are 50% off until the end of the summer sale: 2$ each or 5$ for the whole collection.

Heh, I started losing interest in pokemon during the 3rd gen. The designs kept getting weirder and quite frankly the gameplay got a little repetitive after a bit.

I tried playing again when Black and White came out, since I didn't play in forever, but the new designs really turned me off. Ah well, at least there's still old gen fan art to enjoy.

Ah, good ol' Ultima. Interesting name choice though. I hope it's not too foreboding. After all, it didn't go so well for a certain Duke fellow.

    Guild Wars 2
    Borderlands 2

I'm kinda worried about GW2 being released next month though. I don't think I'll be able to finish the games I'm playing atm and I have no idea how I will juggle with them all once GW2 comes out. Heh, first world problems right?

  • Valen created a new topic Steam Summer Sales! in the forum.
Steam summer sales are upon us once again, and gosh do they have good games this time around.

I thought I'd share some of the good deals I'm seeing and my impressions on a few of the less known games on sale.

First I'd like to mention that both Ys games (Oath in Felghana and Origin) are on a 66-60% sale at this very moment. For those unfamiliar with the serie, it's an old school platformer - beat 'em up - RPG. It's a pretty well known franchise in Japan, but a little less here. The music in those games is simply amazing (which is what drew me to them in the first place) and the gameplay, while classic, is really enjoyable and, I should add, challenging. Even on normal mode some of the bosses will give you a hard time (note that there are 2 easier difficulty modes under normal), but none of the fights ever felt cheap, if you die it's because you made mistakes. The exploration also plays a big part, at least in Felghana, as there's a lot of hidden goodies for you to find, making exploring every little crannies worthwhile. I could go on a lot more about those, but all in all I guess for 13$ for both game it's something to look at for old school fans and people looking for a challenge. Heck, just take a look at the Steam video and listen to the music Oath in Felghana

Eye of the Beholder. Surely you once heard the name. Either spoken with respect or in utter frustration. Legend of Grimrock is a modern take on the dungeon crawler genre. The premise is quite simple really. Basically you build up a team of 4 adventurer (warrior, mage or thief) that must escape from a dungeon. Don't expect NPCs, a lengthy story or any kind of character development here. It's old school at it's best. Anyway, where this game shines is in the exploration aspect. Nope, no random floor generations, monsters, rooms, secret passages, items, everything is carefully hand placed and it gives a really good, organic feel to the exploration. I'm still not very far in, but it seems there is some sort of story developing while your characters rest, although my guess is it will remain minimalist. Furthermore, don't expect a lot of variation in the dungeon skins, they stay the same throughout the game. The monsters themselves are more varied, but you will mostly encounter the same 2-3 monster types on a given level. However, I'm pretty sure the ambiance, like the sound of the skittering enemies in the dark after your last torch burned out, will keep you hooked. If it doesn't there's always the satisfaction of solving the numerous puzzles or finding out what's behind that secret door you just found. At the moment only 1 dungeon is available (about 20h of gameplay), but other dungeons are being worked on as DLC and a map editor will be released in the near future to further answer to your adventuring needs.

As much as I love Okami, I wonder if the conversion to HD will really make a huge difference. Especially considering the paintbrush art style used.

Nervertheless, as I also own the Wii version, I can say that motion control makes the game shine even more, and that anyone planning to buy it should definitely look into getting the PS3 move controller if only for this amazing game.
